When Jen and I sat down at one of our very first LTYM/Milwaukee meetings, the agenda moved to charities. At the same time, without having had discussed causes before, we both said, “Sojourner Peace Center!”
The Sojourner Peace Family Center of Milwaukee, Wisconsin was a natural draw to both Jen and I. Passion and belief for a cause is everything. Especially with women and families at the heart of its central theme.
Providing shelter, safety and support that is desperately needed to eliminate family violence in our community, with its mission statement as its backbone, “to create peaceful communities in which domestic respect and a life free from violence is the right of every woman, man and child.”
Sojourner Family Peace Center provides education, advocacy and resources to keep people safe. SFPC operates a 46-bed shelter that has provided safety and support services to thousands of women and children. Other programs include a 24-Hour Domestic Violence Hotline, Domestic Abuse Victim Advocates in the Milwaukee District Attorneys Office, Belle Resource Center for Women and Children, Courthouse Advocacy and Restraining Order Clinic, Legal Emergency Assistance, Childrens Advocacy, and Beyond Abuse.
I remember meeting with Debra, the executive director. While sitting in her office, I explained LTYM’s mission and she listened. And it was the way that she listened to our hope and goals for LTYM that made my eyes blur with tears – here was a woman who got Listen To Your Mother. The passion we had together, of building bridges, bringing together, giving a voice to those yearning to tell their story. To finding kindredness among others in our local communities by having been heard and glimpsing a life through another’s eyes.
Sojourner Family Peace Center is committed to creating communities where people live peacefully. Much like Listen To Your Mother: creating communities and being present to witness the life of another.
We proudly announce Sojourner Family Peace Center as our local cause for Listen To Your Mother/Milwaukee. We can’t think of a more natural fit.
