One of our goals for the Eastern Iowa Listen to Your Mother Show is to be able to bless other families in town. So, when Jen, Heather and I (Lyz) sat down to talk about what organization we wanted to donate the proceeds of the show to, the answer was fairly obvious: Waypoint Services.
Waypoint Waypoint provides shelter and support for those in crisis due to homelessness, poverty, domestic violence or sexual assault. It also provides quality child care to over 600 children daily of all socio-economic levels.
So many families I know have benefitted from Waypoint’s services, from childcare to shelter, Waypoint supports Eastern Iowa families by being there when mothers and children fall through the cracks.
We are putting on this event because we believe in families. Believe that they are crucial to who we are, our community and the world we want to be. And Waypoint believes that too, which is why they are there to step up for mothers and children when life falls apart.
On the Waypoint website, there is a story about Laura: a single mother and victim of childhood abuse, who reached out to Waypoint as she struggled to come to terms with the truth of her past. Laura is now an advocate for Waypoint and she notes, “I can’t imagine women living day to day – women who have no home, who can’t afford to go to a psychologist, get help or get housing to get away from an abusive situation. There has to be an option for women who don’t have an option. It’s something you can’t put a price on.”
Waypoint is that option for women and children who have no options.
And that’s why all the proceeds of our Listen to Your Mother Event, every dime we scrabble together, will go to support them.
